MEET EMMYLOU

Emmylou Manwill is a legal aid attorney and advocate for survivors of domestic violence, sexual violence, and human trafficking who lives on Heritage Drive with her fiancé Steve and their rescue cat Casper. She grew up in Millcreek, a small town in Utah nestled at the base of the Rocky Mountains, then moved to Salem after graduating from Boston University School of Law.

Emmylou began her career representing survivors of domestic violence and their children as a Family Law Attorney at MetroWest Legal Services. She guided survivors through the challenging processes of obtaining restraining orders, getting divorced, and resolving custody disputes safely. Today, she advocates for survivors of domestic and sexual violence, human trafficking, and Afghan refugees who supported the United States during the war and will be killed by the Taliban if forced to return to Afghanistan.

Before earning a law degree, Emmylou graduated from the University of Utah and worked in a nonpartisan administrative role at the Utah State Capitol for several years. She also served on the board of the Utah Coalition Against Sexual Assault, an experience that inspired her to pursue a career representing survivors.

Emmylou and her fiancé chose Salem, Massachusetts, as their permanent home, moving here during Halloween week—a mistake she jokes she won’t repeat. They were drawn by the ocean, the vibrant downtown filled with unique breweries and small businesses, and the strong sense of community. Now, Emmylou is running for City Council in Ward 4 to give back to the community she proudly calls home.
